Stiff Little Spinners Vol.5

The Stiff Little Spinners are back on a solo tip with the fifth edition of our vinyl series that's embracing the world of electronic dance clubs and open air raves with heartfelt warmth, organic basslines and a whole lotta love.
After releasing Volume 4 alongside our tenth anniversary compilation „Audiolith -Ten Years From Now“ Stiff Little Spinners Volume 5 once again serves a fine, hand-picked selection of six melodious club essentials somewhat in between Tech- , Romantic- and DeepHouse-grooves for intimate late night jams and cosy venues crowded with musical connaisseurs.
Starting things with the man they call Krink @krink, our Stiff Little Spinner number one, multi-active produce and master of melodies, we see a pumping „Eclipse“ hyping crowds with its on-point pounding bassdrums and an ever spiralling synth line that reaches new heights on top of huge organic basslines and yearning, masterfully crafted strings that'll take every TechHouse-infused set to the next level from the very first drop onwards.
Coming up next is another of our „Old Friends“ - Kalipo @kalipo-1. Whilst exploring further realms of a universe build on a solid foundation of analogue synth structures and tender echoes of processed vocal bits the Berlin-based producer speeds up things here and tops his excellent primetime cut with lively shakers and a killer break introducing nothing but peace, love and overwhelming beauty.
Another well-established member of the Stiff Little Spinners crew is Gimmix @djgimmix who's catering his tune „Lyah“ here – a sweet fusion track amalgamating elements of vocal driven deepness with fascinating Future Garage / SpeedGarage bassrides that are providing maximum pressure on every proper rig. Add up a few Jungle-referencing sample cuts and melancholia driven motor city string arrangements to this mixture and you'll find a perfect combination of elements that is never about to leave any real DJs crates. Instant classic.
Remixed by Rampue @rampue we see Bebetta Conrady's „Shame“ weigh in epic modulations, sweet uplifting vocals, tribalistic drums and candy-coated piano lines that fall together perfectly, building a unique electronic love song of a kind that's translating the universal language of love into a stream of sonic pulses about to trigger all punters hearts for a reason.
More beats, tenderness and pure dancefloor pleasure are provided by the pairing of Torsun Teichgräber @torsunteichgraeber and Danja Mathari with their collaboration effort „In My Own Skin“. Together they're riding the Piano wave on top of slightly distorted yet seductive analogue synth modulations rocketing off into Rave heavens whilst the fragile, cuddly and super-cute vocals turn this tune into an unforgettable love affair that's meant to last forever..
Finally rounding of this little story with a bass heavy fusion of UK Funky, Future Garage and rumbling TechHouse is Hamburg's ILLest producer Joney @joneywho's bringing on a lively swing, athmospheric strings and echoing female vocals bits with his tune “Don't Stop” - an ultimate crossover piece that's calling out for a reload or two.

In the past two years, Bavarian born and now Berlin based producer Jakob Häglsperger has been highly active under the moniker of K a l i p o . After a series of remixes and contributions to compilations released by Stiff Little Spinners, a subdivision of the (in)famous Audiolith imprint, he now presents his debut album Ya r u t o . Häglsperger, who has been making music from his early teens on and has since immersed himself in Hip Hop, Downbeat, Techno and avantgarde music, opts for an experimental approach, hoping to achieve a timeless sound. »What matters most to me is finding my own musical language, a sound that won’t lose its spark.« Ya r u t o can be enjoyed on a hazy Sunday afternoon at home on your couch, but will also increase your endorphins on a Saturday night at a club.

Ya r u t o is as much the product of hard work as it is a result of critical self-evaluation and occasional serendipity. »When I’m in the studio for six days in a row, I spend at least five of them feeling depressed because nothing seems to work out. I go for those four magic minutes in which everything suddenly falls into its place.« After toying with a variety of samples, Häglsperger usually creates patterns and takes them to the studio to flesh out the rough drafts with his wide array of analogue synthesizers and, occasionally, instruments like a Rhodes piano, a metallophone or guitars. Vocal samples are being chopped up and rearranged by Häglsperger until the syllables develop a life of their own and eventually create the abstract narrative that makes up the thematic backbone of this otherwise intuitively written record. From the opener »Embryo« and the track that gave the album its name through to the final track »Cloud Dancing II«, Ya r u t o follows what you might call an impersonal biography by creating moods that correspond with certain stages of life, constantly commented on by disembodied voices.

Ya r u t o will be released on Antime, the Berlin based label run by Martin Steer with whom Hägelsperger shares production duties in the German Electro Punk outfit Frittenbude. »Antime was an obvious choice, because Martin fully trusts me and my creative instinct. Thus, I can experiment as much as I want to and don’t have to compro- mise even though my music might not have a mass appeal«, says Hägslperger, who has also relocated to the German capitol a few years back, with regard to the hypnotic, Gamelan-influenced rhythms on tracks like »Listen To You« and subtle nods to composers like Steve Reich whose Music For 18 Musicians Häglsperger cites in »Get Rich«.

Despite being his own most critical judge, Häglsperger, who in his energetic live sets uses only ana- logue hardware, has worked on the album almost completely autonomous and also contributed to the album’s artwork. As his first hobby turned into a fulltime job, Häglsperger decided he was in urgent need of a second one and resorted to analogue photography. Some of his pictures made their way into the artwork which was taken care of by Antime’s in-house graphic designers Johann Steer and Helga Stirle.

Ya r u t o has been in the works for more than a year while Häglsperger was producing albums for the likes of Fuck Art, Let’s Dance and others and will be followed by a series of digital releases as well as music videos on which he is currently working on.

Just before Jakob Häglsperger’s debut album under his moniker Kalipo sees the light of day, the Berlin based Antime label is proud to present to you a teaser in form of a digital single set to be released on July 18. “Yaruto” not only gave the album its title, but is also the centrepiece of the abstract narrative that Häglsperger was trying to stretch out over its ten tracks on which he worked almost autonomously for over a year. It combines all the distinctive elements of Kalipo’s sound: Disembodied, chopped up vocals, warm basslines and polyrhythmic structures.
With his epic 12 minute long remix, midimúm alias Martin Steer takes the track’s danceability one step further. Steer – who not only runs Antime but has also been one of Häglsperger’s closest friends since their teenage days and has been sharing with him production and songwriting duties in the German Electropunk outfit Frittenbude for almost a decade now – explores his passion for Dub Techno and droney, synth-laden Electronica to make “Yaruto” fit for peak time hours.
On top of that, the digital bundle also includes “Andrewsarchus”, a track inspired by a lively reconstruction of the prehistoric mammal of the same name which Häglsperger once saw in the dinosaur-themed recreation park Germendorf in Eastern Germany. With its distorted analogue synth lines, flaring drones and throbbing beats, the tracks pays a claustrophobic homage to the extinct animal that is generally assumed to be a predator or scavenger.
Kalipo’s debut album Yaruto will be released on September 12. It will be followed by at least one complimentary single and various videos created by no-one else but Jakob Häglsperger himself.

Kalipo

Kalipo is Jakob Häglsperger, a Bavarian born producer who has made a name for himself as a producer for Marcus Wiebusch, Ira Atari, pandoras box and Fuck Art, Let’s Dance, but is more widely known as a member the German electro punk outfit Frittenbude for which he has produced three albums. As Kalipo, the now Berlin-based artist goes into a different and less wild musical direction, blending lush House rhythms with trance inducing Techno beats somewhere between 110 and 130 bpm while also taking cues from Downbeat and Gamelan traditions. With synthesizers, micro samples and acoustic instruments, Häglsperger intuitively builds melancholic yet driving arcs of suspense which are best to be enjoyed on a hazy Sunday afternoon at home on your couch and will also increase your endorphins on a Saturday night. In his energetic live sets, the renowned producer makes use of his extensive array of analogue synthesizers and drum machines.

Influenced by Viennese style Downbeat and Hip Hop, Häglsperger started producing his own music in the late 1990es before taking up DJing. For a while Häglsperger considered DJing to be his main outlet, touring the clubs under a variety of different monikers. In those days record stores were still more important than online portals, the music industry hadn’t yet collapsed and DJing still was a job that provided a lot of challenges. After the infrastructures had decisively changed and the scene had become more fast moving than ever, Häglsperger lost interest in this occupation and decided to focus exclusively on his career as a producer, trying to develop a live set that drew on the experiences he has made as a DJ in hope of achieving a both unique and timeless sound.

The music Häglsperger makes as Kalipo – the curious name came to Häglsperger under the shower one day – is situated between his passion for Downbeat and raving dance music. Apart from providing his production and remixing skills for a variety of artists over the past few years, he also contributed to several compilations put out by Stiff Little Spinners. Kalipo’s debut album Yaruto follows the abstract narrative of an impersonal biography by creating moods that correspond with certain stages of life. Yaruto is being released by Antime Records, the Berlin-based label run by Häglepsperger’s close friend and Frittenbude band colleague Martin Steer. Not only has Häglsperger produced the album entirely by himself, he also contributed several analogue photos that were used in the album’s artwork and produced music videos to be released along with the album and its complementary singles.

From his first bedroom recordings in his native Bavaria to his chart-breaking records with Frittenbude and his many-sided work as Kalipo, Jakob Häglsperger has always been hard working and driven by both the passion and the ambition that have brought as many unique and timeless pieces of art.
